Gastric Bypass Surgery

Mini gastric bypass surgery in short MGB is a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery which is recommended for weight loss treatment. It is very similar in nature to the conventional roux-en-Y (RNY) surgery.

What Is Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Mini gastric bypass surgery (MGB) is a weight loss surgery which can be revised. Compared to RNY and gastric sleeve surgery, MGB is less time-consuming surgery, less invasive and less recovery time taken. Surgery takes 90 minutes or less to complete entire procedure and patient is discharged from the hospital within 72 hours. Qualified surgeon first access the abdominal cavity with five small 1 inch incisions, retracts the lever as it is placed on the stomach to complete the operation. Instead, a small pouch that is placed in the stomach like in the gastric sleeve surgery, the MGB surgery method generates a slim tube-like pouch which can possess only 1 – 2 ounces of food at a time. The small intestine is then connected to the new pouch at about 6 – 7 feet from its beginning point. This new bypass placement of the intestine absorbs fewer nutrients by the body giving effect to lose the body weight. Ghrelin which is called hunger hormone is responsible for the feeling of appetite falls its level of secretion resulting in less appetite of the patient. Mini gastric bypass surgery has a success rate of 80%. It also reduces co-morbid issues like diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension etc.

What Is Post-Gastric Bypass Surgery Guidance?

you have to follow a liquid diet immediately after gastric bypass surgery. Once you will be able to sip clear non-sugar liquid or apple, grape juice you will be allowed to take the prescribed MGB diet. In the second stage, you will be given protein shake, diluted oatmeal, skim milk, instant potatoes etc.

Mini gastric bypass surgery is a restrictive process and also mal-absorptive. As a result, your food intake will be less and your body will absorb fewer calories and finally, you will lose weight. Following the surgery and for the rest of the life you need to prepare a routine, healthy dietary and exercise chart in consultation with your doctor which may be reviewed periodically. It is equally important to take regular medicines and supplements if prescribed by your doctor like the bariatric multivitamin, vitamin B12, calcium and iron (in case of a woman under menstruating age).

What Is The Complication Of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Mild discomfort immediately after surgery such as pain from gas, inflammation, swelling etc., is observed which is manageable by proper medication. Few severe side effects like blood clotting, vomiting, infection, pneumonia etc., are observed in very few cases which are reported less than 1%. In such cases, immediate attention has to be drawn to the surgeon for proper remedial measures.
